Welcome to my world!

I'm a fun-loving rider, reader, animal-whisperer and artist amongst other things who is currently taking a gap year after (finally) finishing school! At present I'm getting set up to go over to Canada and work as a horseback guide on a ranch- YEE-HA!

I enjoy messing around with a huge variety of traditional media; inks, watercolour, charcoal, pencil, acrylic, oil paint, sculpture AND MORE! I would like to do digital art, honest! It's just photoshop and I don't get along very well :/

I first joined DA a couple of years ago, and was completely floored by how supportive the community is and the wonders it does in terms of inspiration, encouragement and feedback. However with my final two years of high school ('secondary education' in some parts of the world) I was very busy doing art, of all things, which I did not post up here due to 'official marks' and whatnot. So as time passed by I stopped uploading work and joining in as much, though I still made a habit of checking in on my favorite artists on a regular basis. BUT NOW- while I'm not working to save up for my big OE (as it turns out tickets to the other side of the world ain't cheap) I'll be pushing myself to keep improving all areas of my art, and of course sharing it here too! Constructive criticism and feedback is always appreciated here, but otherwise you're more than welcome to sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights!

TL;DR: I'm back

Who's a pretty boy? by xXShiningstar
Who's a pretty boy?
Did I ever mention that I adore birds? Because I do- I really, really do. I've been lucky enough to have a couple of wonderful wee budgies in my life for the past few years, but this gorgeous blue-boy here is bucket list material for me! Of course macaws do come at a very steep price, and not just money-wise either (I've been told people will get divorces over these guys!) Eh, I could settle for an alexandrine parrot :D

Oh yes, the art. It is watercolor, if you hadn't already guessed. But most surprising is that I used colours, COLOURS- that's plural! Basically the way I've got it figured out in my head is I treat each colour like a shade (does that even make sense?) so look at the yellow feathers and break down which bits are lightest to darkest, layer it up, move onto the next colour. Hah, easier said than done though :/

If you have any experience with watercolours- or well just using multiple colours in general- I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you get them to work together in an image. Thoughts and constructive criticism always welcome!

Green Horse by xXShiningstar
Green Horse
You know that one time when you're just perfectly content with how your art turned out? Well that's this one for me, I'm just in love with this guy! Though I REALLY need to practice using more than one colour at a time haha...

Gotta scan it in properly instead of just taking a picture, will upload a good quality pic soon!

Family walk by xXShiningstar
Family walk
Well, not the whole family (we'd never get the boys even halfway up there xD ). My sister on her beautiful boy Forest, with parents and dogs bringing up the rear (I of course took the photo and was charging on ahead up front, no horse required!)
I was so in love with the composition of this photo I just had to paint it! Done late last year I was (and still am) in favor of sticking to one colour and shading according to tone- lots of colours confuuuuuse me :O

The mountain pond by xXShiningstar
The mountain pond
The destination we were heading to in xxshiningstar.deviantart.com/a…
Sadly I got a little impatient with the watercolor (I need to think ahead more when I use it, can't just push and pull like with charcoal or oil paint) so a few hours in I was all 'yeah but the colours aren't vivid enough...' and proceeded to paint the water so dark it looked like mud :/ I actually got pretty bored with this and left it to gather dust several months ago, then decided to get it done once and for all by going at it with an artline pen- can't say I'm unhappy with the result :D

Unfortunately we can't wade around in the pond anymore- though I ride past it every time I go up the hill some farmers have fenced it off, so no more playing in the water :iconsadplz:

Up the hill by xXShiningstar
Up the hill
Charcoal drawing I did a couple of months back, the photo itself was so grainy I could practically count the pixels xD
Behold two of my friends and I (or six in total if you count our partners) heading up the hill on a hot summer day to play in the pond! Jackrabbit and I are the ones in the middle- he kept stopping to look at who was taking the picture :P

So browsing through some of my favorite sculptors I was shocked and disgusted to find that two of my inspiration role-models :iconscenceable: and :iconwormsandbones: had been, blunt and to the point, scammed over Etsy by a buyer and lost hundreds of dollars between them. This made me both very sad to hear of such great artists loosing their work, and furious at the person who has allegedly been doing this for 10 or so years, and so I'm posting this journal just to make my fellow art-and-crafters aware of this potential disaster.
Here is a link to :iconscenceable:'s journal containing the details and what to look for scenceable.deviantart.com/jour…
Be careful out there everyone!
